A Pith Helmet is a helmet covered with a cloth and is made from a plant extract known as Sholapith. It is similar to the Salakot hat from the Philippines, but is not exactly the same. A salakot has a conical tip, while the Pith Helmet has a rounded crown like a hat.

The distinctive feature of a Pith Helmet is the wide brim that helps in protecting the wearer from sun and rain. Although the hat first originated in the Philippines, it was later adopted by many other country’s armies that traveled to hot and arid regions.

However, due to its conspicuous design, it was given up from the army uniforms as they were less practical.
