Shovel Hat was an angelical clergy hat worn by archdeacons and bishops. The hat had an extremely shallow crown and a wide brim with a shovel-like curvature at the front and back. The brim was slightly raised upward. The hat was made from black beaver felt and therefore provided warmth to the wearer.

As the hat was associated with the orthodox churches, it was also a symbol of orthodox thinking and led to the origin of the term ‘shovelhattery’ with the same meaning.
