Forage cap is not any particular hat type but a term for various military headwear. The shape has varied over time. The cap got its name because troops were worn while gathering food for their cavalry horses; however, later on, the term was also used for undress caps that were won when full form headwear was not worn.
The cap could be creased on the length and have a peak, but German troops also wore a non-peaked version that resembled the sailor’s cap. At times, Forage caps are also worn at an angle or with a slant.
