Cloche is French for the bell, and that is the shape of a Cloche hat. It became popular in the early 1900s and was manufactured in bulk. These hats are meant to cover the head and ears snugly and come on to the forehead, just above the wearer’s eyes.
Cloche hats are made from materials that fit in a snug manner to the wearer’s head. Therefore, the most popular material is felt. However, if desired to be worn in summer, they can be made from straw or sisal too.
Cloche hats generally have a single colored ribbon to make the hat look more attractive. They look best for short-haired wearers but are typically meant for women. They became so popular at one point in time, that they were used as bridal wear too and, therefore, decorated with beads and lace.
