A toque is a hat with a narrow-brim or without a brim. It was a popular regular wear hat from the 13th to the 16th century, but now it is mostly associated with the chef’s uniform. The Toque has a pleated long and floppy crown with a fluffy top.

It is still very popular in the traditional French restaurant and is a symbol of seniority because the number of pleats symbolize the various cooking techniques the wearer is aware of.

In cooking establishments, Toque is typically white in color and, therefore, known as a Toque Blanche; however, a red Toque is also worn by the German judges. Toque Blanche is made from breathable materials such as cotton to enable the wearer to wear it for long periods in a hot cooking environment.
