A Top hat is a traditional formal hat that descended from the Sugarloaf hats. The top hat is a cylindrical hat with the brim slightly raised upwards. The crown is tapered, making it wider at the top and narrower at the bottom. Originally, the crown had a height of 7 inches, but it had gradually declined over time to 5 inches.
Originally, the Top hat was made from felt beaver fur and therefore gave great protection against the cold weather; however, silk became the more popular choice with evolving fashion as it symbolized affluence. The top hat is decorated with a grosgrain ribbon or a bow around the crown-making them more appropriate for formal occasions.
Top hats have a structured crown and are therefore not foldable; however, this led to the birth of Opera hats, which had a collapsible crown and were otherwise the same as the Top hat.
