A cap popularly worn in Montenegro is known as a Montenegrin Cap. It is a cylindrical black-rimmed cap with a flat red crown. It was believed in Serbia that the black rim was a symbol of mourning because of the fall of the Serbian Empire and the occupied Kosovo legend, while the red top surface referred to the blood spilled in the battle of Kosovo.

Apart from these two features, there were five stripes that symbolized the remains of the Serbian realm. These stripes contained a six-star that represented Montenegro, or the last free part of the empire that shined brightly like a star in the sky.

Later on, the communist star also became a part of the hat, but it didn’t gain popularity; but in 2004, the modern Coat of Arms of the city was printed on the top, which gained high popularity.
