As the name suggests, the Icelandic Tail Cap is a component of Iceland’s national costume. Icelandic Tail Cap is a beanie with a long tail hanging on the side of the wearer’s head. As Iceland is a cold country, these hats are generally knitted and made from wool or wool alternatives such as cashmere. The end of the tail has tassels making it more decorative.

Icelandic Tail Cap was originally meant for men but was also worn by women from the 18th century onwards. Men wore a striped cap while women wore plain black ones. As time evolved, Icelandic Tail Caps became available in many different colors. Men’s versions used coarser wool, while women’s versions had components made from more delicate materials such as finer wool, silk, velvet, and the likes.
