Hikitate Eboshi is a traditional Japanese black hat shaped like a bird’s feather, and therefore, the literal translation of the words also means ‘bird hat.’ The hat is also known as the Samurai hat as the samurais wore it. Taller the hat, higher-ranked was the samurai. Hikitate Eboshi was presented to the wearer at the age of 12 at a traditional coming of age ceremony.
Generally, Hikitate Eboshi had a height between 20 to 40 cm. As samurais rode horses, they tied white-colored ties to their hats for stability. Hikitate Eboshi was made from lacquered gauze and were slightly transparent or translucent in their appearance.
