Hardee Hat was a black felt hat with a straight flat top crown and a wide brim that was folded and pinned to the crown for aesthetic purposes. These were a part of the US army during the American Civil War era; however, many soldiers found it too warm and preferred to wear forage caps.
Most Hardee Hats had a wool hat cord around the crown and a brass device that conveyed the army’s wearer’s regiment. It was a custom that the cavalry and artillery armies pinned the brim on the right and the infantry on the left.
