Bollenhut is a German Hat that translates to the Ball Hat. It is a traditional hat worn by German Protestant women. Each hat consists of a whitewashed straw hat with fourteen woolen pompoms placed on the hat’s brim and around the crown. However, only eleven of these pompoms are visible.

As per tradition, unmarried girls wear hats with red pompoms, married ones with black ones, and older women wear those without the pompoms. Apart from the tradition, there is also a practical reason behind it, the hat with pompoms can weigh up to 2Kgs, and it is very heavy for the older women to wear it for long hours.

Further, the hat has a chin strap to secure it in its position; otherwise, the hat’s weight will push it down.
